Bellator MMA returned to action tonight for Bellator 100. In the main event, Douglas Lima would emphatically claim the Season 8 tournament title by destroying Ben Saunders with a second round head kick. In other action, War Machine, Rick Hawn, Ron Keslar, and Brent Weedman would all advance in the opening round of the Season 9 welterweight tournament.
Lima Blasts Saunders for Second Tournament Title
Douglas Lima wanted to make a statement tonight in the Season 8 tournament final despite facing his friend Ben Saunders in a rematch of the Season 5 final. Lima accomplished that, and then some, with a brutal second round knockout in tonight’s fight. The ATT Atlanta product floored Saunders early in the round with a wicked uppercut but Saunders managed to recover despite a completely shut eye. Lima would take advantage of Saunders’ injury by connecting on a nasty head kick that left “Killa B” trying to figure out what happened.
The victory gives Lima his fourth straight victory and his second Bellator tournament title. A rematch with champion Ben Askren could now be possible if the former MIZZOU wrestler resigns with the promotion. If Askren leaves however, the Season 9 winner could be next to face Lima.
War Machine Chokes Anderson
It was not a pretty fight between War Machine and Vaughn Anderson, but the man formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver would prevail. Koppenhaver was able to secure the victory using his superior BJJ to secure a technical submission victory over Anderson. War Machine will now take on Ron Keslar in the semifinals.
Hawn Controls Terrado
Rick Hawn stepped up on short notice to take on Herman Terrado tonight at the Grand Canyon University Arena. The Olympic judoka controlled the majority of the bout with more accurate striking being the key against the slower Terrado. Hawn will now face Brent Weedman in the semifinals.
Keslar Edges Junior
Ron Keslar took advantage of a short notice opportunity by defeating Luis Melo tonight in Phoenix. The bout played out mostly on the ground in the second and third frames, with Keslar holding dominant position but not advancing. Despite the lack of urgency, Keslar still pulled out the victory.
Weedman Submits Baesman
Brent Weedman was the first fighter to advance to the semifinal round of the Season 9 tournament with a victory over Justin Baseman. Weedman pressed the pace from the opening bell and it paid off once he got the fight to the ground. Weedman quickly transitioned to a slice armbar from backmount but Baesman was game and made him work for the finish after a lengthy battle for the armbar.
