Although Pat Healy raised more than a few eyebrows at UFC 159, when he choked out perennial contender Jim Miller (the result being overturned aside), the fighter evidently feels like he has something to prove all over again tonight at UFC 165. The reason being is that although Healy has gone undefeated in seven straight fights, and was Strikeforce’s #1 lightweight contender before the promotion closed shop, the betting lines have him as the underdog versus Khabib Nurmagomedov.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting. com, here’s what Healy (29-16, 1 NC) had to say about his status heading into his bout with Nurmagomedov (20-0), who has won 4 straight in the UFC.
“I’m not going to lie,” Healy said. “I’ve got a little bit of a chip on my shoulder about being made the underdog in this fight. It’s like people didn’t even see the Jim Miller fight.”
“This isn’t just going to be a wrestling match, but yeah, with everything that’s been said about Khabib’s takedowns, I do feel like I have a little bit of something to prove,” Healy noted.
If you’re curious, several of the oddsmakers have Healy as an underdog in the +180 to +210 range for tonight’s scrap. It’s going to be interesting to see how each fighter looks to secure the win, as well as how each man’s renowned grappling abilities match-up. If Nurmagomedov wins, he very well could move into the coveted top ten ranks.
