MMAFrenzy’s coverage of UFC 165 continues with our recap of tonight’s co-main event for the UFC interim bantamweight title between champion Renan Barão and Eddie Wineland. In the end the Brazilian would retain the title after a furious finish.
Barão Flattens Wineland
UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barão retained the title tonight in Toronto with an extremely impressive performance tonight against Eddie Wineland. Barão engaged in a tight first round with Wineland but began to find his range as the bout wore on. Wineland looked to press at the start of the second but Barão would not give him the chance to get going as he connected with a vicious spinning back kick to the head that floored Wineland. The bout was then called after a few followup shots by the Brazilian.
Barão has now won 21 straight fights and will look to unify the UFC bantamweight crown in early 2014 against champion Dominick Cruz, who has been on the shelf for over two years due to a knee injury.
Rd. 1- Yves Lavigne is the third man in the cage and the fight starts with a touch of gloves. Barao opens the action with a legkick by Barao as he is looking to stay out of Wineland’s range. Nice inside legkick by Barao is answered by Wineland’s vicious right. Barao with a weak takedown attempt and Wineland takes control of the clinch. Lavigne separates them as the action stalls. High kick by Barao is caught and Wineland throws him down. Barao just misses on a spinning kick and Wineland with a nice combo punctuated by a legkick. Legkick by Barao. Nice combo by Barao and Wineland stuffs his takedown attempt. Nice right over-the-top by Barao. Nice combo by Barao and he lands a body kick on the ends. Nice legkick by Barao as he is finding his range. Great round. MMAFrenzy scores a very tight round 10-9 Barão.
Rd. 2- Wineland storms out quickly and Barao with a body shot. Holy hell what a spinning back kick to the head and Barão swarms on the ground and it is all over. Wow, what a knockout!
