After last night’s, edge of your seat war between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165, you might be hard pressed to find many people who don’t want to see a rematch. The fight was not only thrilling from pretty much start to finish, but since it was so competitive, no one could be certain who in fact was going to have their hand raised afterwards. Jones turned it on in the championship rounds, and as you certainly know by now, retained the light-heavyweight belt with a UD win.
So, considering the way the bout unfolded and how competitive it was, naturally, calls for a rematch are already being made. Dana White was asked about the possibility during the post-fight presser, and here’s what the UFC boss man had to say (comments via MMA Junkie.com):
“We’ve got to see how these guys feel, (and) if anything is wrong with them, and then go from there”
“I didn’t say we were going to do the rematch,” he said. “I would like to do the rematch. It makes sense, I like it. First of all, with a fight like this, you’ve got to go home and let things play out. Jon Jones isn’t going to even want to hear the word fight for two, three weeks. I guarantee you that. Maybe it is Glover (Teixeira), maybe it’s a rematch. I don’t know.”
One could conclude based off White’s comments that if Jones and Gustafsson are interested in booking a rematch, and are ready to go health wise, then Jones-Gustafsson II could be next. If one of them decides to take some time off, or needs to, then Teixeira could end up fighting one of the two? Here’s hoping we find out soon.
Gustafsson, it should also be noted, told FOX Sports 2 afterwards that he’s “absolutely” interested in a rematch.
