Jones vs. Teixeira Targeted for Super Bowl Card

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is likely to defend his title on Super Bowl weekend against Glover Teixeira. UFC president Dana White revealed the news to ESPN early Thursday morning.

Teixeira earned his preordained title shot by defeating Ryan Bader at UFC Fight Night 28. Despite being knocked down early, Teixeira would rally to land a decisive TKO victory over the former Sun Devil wrestler. Teixeira carries a 20-fight win streak into the fight with the champ.

White stated the promotion still has plans for Gustafsson despite not being in the expected rematch. Though White remained coy about a date and opponent, he assured the Swede would headline a card in Sweden around the same time and that a rematch would follow, provided both won of course.

The UFC’s traditional Super Bowl card will take place February 1 in Newark, New Jersey. The event will land on the Saturday prior to Super Bowl XLVIII, which will be broadcast on FOX live at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. While broadcast plans are not official at this time, FOX Sports has pushed to land the event on their own network.
