While post UFC 165 calls for Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson II has likely not reached what transpired after Anderson Silva was blasted by Chris Weidman, the internet is ablaze with discussion about it nonetheless. Even the biggest Glover Teixeira fans of all time won’t be boycotting the fight if Jones ends up fighting Gustafson next. It was that good.
As the MMA world waits to see what happens next, various insiders and pundits continue to weigh in on whether the rematch should or will happen. Case in point, Alliance MMA and Gustafsson trainer Eric Del Fierro appeared on a recent edition of MMA Junkie.com Radio, and here is some of what the renowned coach had to say about situation.
“I know Alex has what it takes to beat him, so I know he would love to have the rematch, as well,” Fierro said. “As a challenger, you can’t scream rematch. But yeah, it would be great. Alex deserves it. He put on a great performance.”
“I think the championship rounds is what cost us. When I was there, I thought we lost the fourth round, and obviously we lost the fifth round. That fifth round we needed to cement the win. It was close, and looking at everybody’s scorecards, people had it mixed. It was a super close fight, but we truly needed that fifth round to take the belt from him.”
It definitely was a close and unforgettable fight. If the rematch does get booked, it will be fascinating to see what goes down. Will it be another memorable and competitive fight?
