The UFC has decided to cut ties with perennial middleweight contender Yushin Okami after more than seven years with the promotion. Okami tallied a 13-5 record with the promotion but came up short in his lone title shot against then-champion Anderson Silva. MMAJunkie first reported Okami’s release.
Okami’s last bout in the Octagon saw him drop a brutal TKO at the hands of top contender Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza. The loss snapped a three-fight win streak for the fighter UFC President Dana White has called, “The best fighter to ever come out of Japan.”
Okami still sits at #6 in the UFC, and the MMAFrenzy, middleweight rankings. While it is easy to compare this cut to the release of Jon Fitch, Fitch had a 1-2-1 record in his last four while Okami’s 3-1 mark makes the move a bit more surprising.
