MMAFrenzy’s coverage of the UFC’s midweek action continues with our UFC Fight Night 29 Play-by-Play. Our coverage will begin tonight at 7PM ET and continue through tonight’s main event pitting welterweights Demian Maia and Jake Shields in the Octagon. UFC Fight Night 29 Play-by-Play

Raphael Assunção vs. T.J. Dillashaw

Rd. 1- Big legkick by RA to start the fight. RA with a nasty right hand as well. Headkick by Dillashaw and he lands a legkick. Smooth takedown by Dillashaw but RA is right back up. Nice combo by RA. Big headkick by RA but he eats it. Dillashaw misses a takedown and blocks and spins a counter takedown by RA. Standing neck crank by Dillashaw and he switches to a Gable grip RNC but RA escapes. RA escapes to his feet and he is wearing some damage now. Dillashaw slips on a headkick but scrambles to his feet. Great first round. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Dillashaw.

Rd. 2- Assuncao’s eye looks bad to start the round. RA with a legkick and he catches a kick from Dillashaw to land a body kick of his own. Headkick by Dillashaw. RA catches a kick and blasts Dillashaw with a strike. Takedown attempt by Dillashaw and he end up in a guillotine choke. Dillashaw recovers but ends up in another choke. Referee checks Dillashaw but he is fine. RA basically has a front-headlock and uses it to stand up. Nasty left hook by RA to counter Dillashaw. RA misses a takedown after slipping on a kick and Dillashaw takes him down and takes RA’s back. RA escapes but eats a knee on the way up. Big flurry as the round ends and both land solid shots. Excellent fight. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Assunção but it is close.

Rd. 3- Dillashaw tries a jumping attack but eats a right and is taken down. Dillashaw with a knee after escaping but again his kick is caught. Dillashaw counters a head kick with a nice right. RA with a good combo of his own. RA tries a single but it is not there. Both fighters have bloody noses now. Great sprawl by Dillashaw and he lands a knee to the body on the way back up. Nasty cut above Dillashaw’s right eye now. Nice jab by RA as he makes Dillashaw chase. RA is showing great cage awareness but eats a nice left hook. Body kick by by RA. Dillashaw with a takedown attempt but RA uses the cage to stuff it. Body kick by Dillashaw. Both look for openings as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has a very close fight 29-28 Assunção but it could go either way.

Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Pierce

Rd. 1- Keith Peterson is our referee. Pierce storms forward with a wild striking attack that allows Palhares to attack the legs. Pierce works up but Palhares drops to a heelhook and Pierce is immediately forced to tap. The referee stops the bout a bit incorrectly but Palhares definitely held it longer than needed.

Joey Beltran vs. Fabio Maldonado

Rd. 1- Beltran more active early but not doing anything substantial yet. Jab by Maldonado. Beltran with a single leg attack but Maldonado defends well. Beltran starts punching and lands two to the groin and Mario Yamasaki stops it for a moment. Nice combo by Beltran as he goes into a takedown. Maldonado defends it and reverses the clinch. Body shots by Maldonado but a big pair of knees from Beltran out of the thai plum. Big combo by Beltran. Nice elbow by Beltran. Uppercuts by Maldonado in the clinch. Beltran misses a big shot and eats a hard counter from Maldonado. Short uppercuts are landing by Maldonado to Beltrans chin but the judges are likely missing them. Takedown by Beltran but Maldonado stands while eating several punches. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Beltran.

Rd. 2- Jabs by Beltran early. Finally some head movement from Maldonado. Maldonado doubles up on the jab and circles away from the cage. Body shot and legkick by Beltran. Beltran clinches but eats several combos from Maldonado which causes him to lose control in the clinch. Body shots by Beltran now. Big shot by Maldonado and he backs off Beltran. Maldonado waves Beltran back to the cage and Beltran clinches after an exchange. Big elbow by Beltran before he goes for another single. Brief stoppage to replace Maldonado’s mouth piece. Beltran looks like he got poked but waves the fight on. Both are swinging now as Maldonado finds his range. Beltran telegraphs a takedown and Maldonado easily stuffs it. Dirty boxing and uppercuts by Maldonado in the final minute. Maldonado has found his range and Beltran is visibly winded. Beltran and Maldonado swing it out until right before the horn MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Maldonado (19-19).

Rd. 3- Combos by Maldonado to start the round but Beltran with a big shot of his own. Big right by Maldonado stuffs a takedown by Beltran. Beltran in on a single now. Yamasaki splits them up as the action stalls. Both are exchanging now and Beltran with a big right. Beltran clinches and lands some uppercuts on the inside. Maldonado with hard body shots but one drops below the belt and we have a brief stoppage. Both men are bloodied and Beltran’s left eye is damaged. Big right by Maldonado. Big combo by Beltran and he snaps to a front headlock and against backside control. Knees to the body and arms by Beltran. Maldonado is eating big punches as the fight ends. MMAFrenzy has it 29-28 Beltran.

Matt Hamill vs. Thiago Silva

Rd. 1- Keith Peterson is our referee tonight. Hamill with a knee pick takedown but be never establishes top control. Fighters exchange leg kicks and Hamill with a nice left. Big right by Silva stuns Hamill. Big outside legkicks by Silva. Pace slows as Silva picks his shots now. More inside legkicks by Silva. 1-2 combos by Silva. Body shot by Hamill lands nicely. Silva is really breathing hard in the Octagon. Another inside legkick by Silva. Good combo by Hamill. MMAFrenzy has the round 10-9 Silva.

Rd. 2- Hamill lands early but gets stunned by Silva. Spinning elbow by Hamill lands. Hamill with a jab and a takedown attempt that misses. He secures a second takedown but Silva is back up now. Outside legkicks by Silva and an inside legkick now. Inside legkicks by Silva now. Legkick by Hamill. Huge left and right by Silva and a followup shot drops Hamill. Silva looks exhausted while trying to finish and Hamill escapes with Silva on his back. Big shots from Silva now. Big left by Silva. Hamill with a takedown and he takes Silva’s back as the Brazilian stands. Hamill swings him back to the canvas shortly before the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Silva (20-18).

Rd. 3- Silva stuffs a takedown and takes Hamill’s back. Hamill stands and the fighters exchange legkicks. Hamill telegraphs a takedown and it is not there at all. Big outside legkick by Silva and Hamill catches Silva in the eye. Silva sees the doctor and he tells him he is fine. Another massive outside legkick off the restart. Uppercut by Hamill but he eats and inside-outside legkick combo by Silva. Hamill with a body lock now. Another big outside leg kick by Silva off the restart. Hamill looks exhausted. Overhand right by Silva lands and Hamill clinches and tries a cross-body knee pick. Huge outside legkick by Silva and Hamill looks done. Big knees by Silva. Silva is beating up a clearly done Hamill. Hamill isn’t even trying anything as Silva tears him up to the final horn. MMAFrenzy has it 10-8 Silva (30-26).

Thiago Silva def. Matt Hamill via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-27)

Dong Hyun Kim vs. Erick Silva

Rd. 1- Spinning elbow by Silva early. Kim attacking with grappling attacks now and Silva has defended so far. Kim misses a spinning attack of his own. Silva swings a wild combination before getting tied up along the cage. Knees by Kim. Silva breaks free and just walks away. Kim clinches and lands a shot before Silva escapes. Kim forces a slip by Silva with a nice left hand and almost immediately ends up in mount. Silva ties it up as Kim lands short shots and repositions Silva on the cage. Silva tries a half-guard sweep but doesn’t get it and switches to a leg attack before Kim counters. Kim is isolating an arm in half guard now while still throwing punches. Silva looks for a heel hook as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Kim.

Rd. 2- Mario Yamasaki toweled off Silva between rounds. Big strikes by Silva and he is connecting. The crowd goes wild as Kim tries to recover and he scrambles up after a knockdown to seize control in the clinch. Headkick by Kim is checked. Straight right to a takedown attempt by Kim. Big knee in the clinch by Silva. Nice jab by Silva. Both fighters are looking a bit tired now. Spinning elbow attack by Silva is ducked. Big uppercuts and a right by Silva. Silva takes Kim’s back while standing but nothing comes of it other than Kim being warned for a cage grab. Both fighters throw lefts at the same time but Kim’s head movement is the difference as Silva is out cold. Holy crap what a knockout.

Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields

Rd. 1- Maia seizes control of the cage early as Shields stays on the outside. Maia with a takedown attempt that Shields defends well. Maia in the clinch and he uses a body lock to get Shields down. Punches by Maia on the ground now as he is in Shields’s butterfly guard. Shields using the cage and stands up to get a body lock of his own but Maia pummels in and takes him down again. Butterfly guard for Shields and he gives up hus back to stand. Maia jumps for the choke but Shields hips him off and reverses Maia. Shields is in Maia’s guard now. Shields checks the clock as Maia looks comfortable off as his back. Shields has half guard now and he peppers a few punches that Maia mostly blocks. Short elbows by Shields as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-10.

Rd. 2- Maia again controls the center and Shields tries a takedown. Maia reverses but Shields uses a butt-drag to counter the Hi-C and take Maia down. Short elbows by Shields now. Maia works back to the cage and uses a butterfly to elevate Shields briefly. Shields with a half guard sit out but Maia recovers guard. Double butterflies by Maia and he gives up half guard to try and stand. Marc Goddard asks for more action. Shileds is just holding in half guard. Maia looks for a shoulder lock in guard but Shields is wise to it. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Shields (20-19).

Rd. 3- Inside legkick by Shields to start the action. Maia starting to let his hands fly a bit as Shields condtorls distance. Overhand left by Maia forces Shields into a double leg but Maia reverses him. Shields steps over on a whizzer but Maia can’t make him pay. Maia tags Shields with a nasty combo and takes Shields back on the canvas. Punches by Maia but Shields explodes into a reversal and gets it. Shields and Maia are back in half guard now. Maia recovers full guard. Round ends with Jake in his guard. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Shields (30-28)

Rd. 4- Right hand by Maia. Maia stuffs a takedown attempt by Shields and controls the clinch. Knees by Maia. Shields has a big mouse under his left eye. Shields controls the clinch and tries for a takedown. Referee separates them and Shields tries multiple takedowns before Maia reverses him. Punches by Maia now. Shields just looking for a tie-up now. Referee surprisingly stands them up. Lefts by Maia. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Maia (39-38).

Rd. 5- Body shot by Maia as he is blocking Shields’ strikes. Weak inside legkicks by Shields. Hi-C by Shields is easily stuffed by Maia. Headkick by Shields is blocked. Another Hi-C by Shields but he isn’t turning the corner and he drives it to the cage. Shields is just holding onto a double against the cage and Maia uses double-unders to bring him up. Right hand by Maia. Shields tries another takedown and is rebuffed. Big left by Maia. Shields tries a single but Maia sprawls out and Shields drives a double to the cage with a minute left. Shields is doing very little and the referee separates them. Left cross and a left hook from Maia as the fight ends in a flurry. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Maia for a 48-48 draw.
