Following the actions of Rousimar Palhares at UFC FN 29, there were certainly some folks calling for the fighter’s dismissal (as he’s held onto heel hooks for too long in the past), and clearly the UFC and Dana White agreed with them. Palhares and his manager Alex Davis attempted to defend his actions prior to the news he’s been banned for the controversial submission, and now the latter has commented on the UFC’s punishment.
In a follow up report from MMA Junkie.com, Davis has sent the outlet a statement, which outlines the reaction of Palhares to his release as well as what his future plans are. Here is some of that Davis had to say:
He (Palhares) was very sad to hear Dana’s decision. He is not a bad person or dirty fighter, and he is not trying to hurt people. Somehow, he just doesn’t hear or feel things at these moments. He worked very hard to get this far in his career, and he is not going to give up on it. He loves fighting. This is what he does. He apologizes to his fans, and will work hard to resolve these issues and fight in another event that would be interested in having him.
I can understand Dana’s perspective, but I need to reiterate that this kid does not do these things out of maliciousness…He is an awesome fighter by any standards – dedicated, humble and extremely hard-working. He will surpass this bump in the road and continue on with his fighting career.
Dirty fighter or not, there’s no doubt that Palhares is an elite fighter who will probably be a contender in any other promotion. Now it remains to be seen how long it will take for an organization to extend “Toquinho” an offer. It will also be interesting to see how the organization tries to spin it, considering their could be some negative reaction for signing Palhares, particularly if it happens soon.
