ZUFFA hasn’t had to push many different angles to promote UFC 166, as there is already considerable hype surrounding the upcoming October 19th event in Houston, Texas. After all, how often do you see a card in MMA that’s headlined by a rubber match between two of the sport’s biggest stars? And, all three bouts have been championship fights? As a result, it’s not too hard to get pumped up about Cain Velasquez-Junior dos Santos III.
What’s even more intriguing is that the trilogy has unfolded while Velasquez and dos Santos are at the peak of their abilities, and since they’re just 31 and 29 respectively, could they meet again? As many pundits believe? While speaking to the media recently, here’s what Velasquez and dos Santos had to say about the possibility (comments via MMA Fighting.com):
“Sooner or later we’re going to be fighting again because I think Cain Velasquez is a great opponent and a great fighter,” said dos Santos, who quickly stopped Velasquez in their first meeting at UFC on FOX 1. “He’s going to try to keep himself in a good position all the time, as a champion or a good position in the ranks. The same with myself. So I think we’re going to see each other again.”
The heavyweight champion, however, believes the upcoming fight is going to conclude their series.
“I think this’ll be the last [fight between us]. Obviously this is the one that settles is all,” said Velasquez, who battered dos Santos en route to a UD win at UFC 155. “Obviously you have to wait and see, but yeah, I think will be the end of it.”
“I think with this being the third one, we’re both one and one, this’ll kind of settle the whole trilogy itself. That’s it,” he added. “I think there’ll be other opponents that need to be fought.”
If one fighter goes out and scores a one sided win, then it could be a while before the UFC looks to book a fourth fight, even if both men remain at the top.
