UFC 166 kicked off earlier tonight at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas with a four fight billing on Facebook. In the final Facebook preliminary, Adlan Amagov defeated T.J. Waldburger in a violent one-sided affair. In other preliminary action, Tony Ferguson, Andre Fili, and Kyogi Horiguchi picked up victories in tonight’s opening salvo of fights.
Amagov Crushes Waldburger
Chechen Adlan Amagov was impressive tonight against hometown fighter T.J. Waldburger. Amagov’s varied striking attack and takedown defense gave Waldburger fits until Amagov floored him with vicious strikes. The Chechen quickly pounced until the referee halted the bout in a stoppage that came late and resulted in a direct trip to the hospital for Waldburger. Amagov has now won three straight since a loss to Robbie Lawler in Strikeforce.
Ferguson Submits Rio
TUF 13 champion Tony Ferguson made a successful return to the cage tonight by defeating Mike Rio in dominant fashion. “El Cucuy” looked sharp in all phases of the game after his return from a 17-month layoff due to a broken arm. Ferguson rocked Rio with powerful strikes before dropping to a nasty D’arce choke that forced the Miami fighter to submit.
Fili Slices Larsen
Andre “Touchy” Fili was determined to make up for missing weight at yesterday’s weigh-ins and he certainly looked good tonight against Jeremy Larsen. Fili was in full attack mode from the opening bell to the referee’s stoppage with a brutal array strikes that left Larsen with two gnarly cuts before the bout ended. After the fight, Fili admitted to cutting from 178-pounds ten days before tonight’s bout but he certainly made an impression tonight.
Horiguchi Hammers Pague
Tonight’s action kicked off in the bantamweight division as Kyogi Horiguchi took on Dustin Pague in Houston. The Japanese fighter found himself in danger early in the first as Pague nearly secured the rear-naked choke but he fought out and finished the round with a power strike that stunned Pague. Horiguchi kept that momentum going in the second, as attacked with a varied striking attack that floored Pague twice during the round. Horiguchi would not let the fight see a third as he pounded out Pague to secure an impressive debut victory.
