UFC 166 drew 17,238 fans in attendance for a $2.5 million gate at the sold out Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. UFC president Dana White announced the numbers at the UFC 166 Post-Fight Press Conference.
Tonight’s crowd saw UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez defend his title against Junior dos Santos for a second time. The card also saw Daniel Cormier defeat Roy Nelson in the co-main event but the true star of tonight’s show was an incredible fight between Diego Sanchez and Gilbert Melendez.
The attendance numbers are the highest of the promotion’s three shows at the Toyota Center but the live gate is the second highest to UFC 69’s infamous 2007 card that saw UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre defeated by Matt Serra. The 2007 card saw 15,269 fans in attendance (with 12,516 in paid attendance) for a live gate of $2,817,200, representing an average ticket price of over $225.
Tonight’s numbers are an improvement over the promotion’s last trip to Houston for UFC 136, which saw 16,164 fans in attendance for a $2.23 million live gate.
While the number of comps was not revealed tonight, tonight’s UFC 166 numbers represent an approximate average ticket price of over $145. The Texas Athletic Commission is expected to release the final numbers later in the week.
