UFC 166 Medical Suspensions: Dos Santos and Two Others Suspended Indefinitely

TJ Waldburger

The¬†Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has released the list of medical suspensions for this past weekend’s UFC 166. Headlining the list of suspensions was former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, who was battered over his five round main event loss to Cain Velasquez and received an indefinite suspension.

All fighters would at least receive a week-long suspension but 19 fighters would receive longer suspensions from the commission. Dos Santos’ main event partner, UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, would also receive a lengthy layoff due to a possible broken jaw. This injury would seemingly preclude the UFC’s hopes that Velasquez could anchor the UFC 169 lineup but the champ can always be cleared by a doctor ahead of time.

Diego Sanchez would receive a three month layoff for the gnarly cuts he received over the course of his epic battle with Gilbert Melendez but avoided any other major injuries. Melendez would escape the wild fight with only a month-long suspension for precautionary reasons.

As always, fighters can be out a longer or shorter time period pending a visit to the doctor.
