Although Sam Sicilia is coming off losses to Rony “Jason” and Maximo Blanco, the fighter is still known for his stopping power, thanks to the fact that five of his wins have come via knockout. That doesn’t include TKO wins that are far too often called ‘knockouts’ either. If you look at Sicilia’s record he has five victories via KO, which includes his win over Cristiano Marcello at the TUF 15 Finale last June.
At the end of the day, however, Sicilia has come up short in his last two fights, and while speaking to MMA Fighting.com recently he relayed that he’s been rushing to get a knockout. As a result, he’s looking to take a different approach in his UFC Fight Night 32 bout today with Godofredo “Pepey.”
“I have always been used to getting early KOs,” the 27 year-old said. “I know I generate a lot of power for my size especially in this weight category. So the thing that I can adjust is actually working on getting a KO over a three-round fight, rather than always looking to finish it early in the first round. The reality is when you fight tougher opponents, you have to sometimes be prepared to break them down over a few rounds to eventually get the KO.”
So, considering the power Sicilia possesses, it’s not surprising to here the fighter say he’s gunning for a fight night bonus whenever he fights.
“Lets just say I am always bonus hunting,” Sicilia said.
“I am always looking to cause serious damage (rather) than to win on points. I want to win in a fashion that I can be proud of.”
In “Pepey”, Sicilia will face a fighter who has gone 1-2 to date in the UFC, so it’s a huge bout for the featherweight as well. If you’re curious, the betting lines are somewhat conflicted as to who will win today’s scrap, although several have Sicilia as the favourite.
UFC FN 32 will go down in Goiania, Brazil and will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1. Stay tuned to MMA Frenzy.com for all your UFC news and coverage.
