Bellator 109: Shlemenko Floors Marshall

Doug Marshall

MMAFrenzy’s live fight coverage of Bellator 109 concludes with our recap of tonight’s main event between Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko and Doug Marshall. Fireworks were expected and they certainly delivered as the Russian would retain the title with a fantastic performance against the former WEC champion. The fight served as the headliner for the Bellator 109 fight card at the Sands Casino in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Shlemenko Floors Marshall to Retain Crown

Doug “Rhino” Marshall talked a great deal about how he would be the one to dethrone Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko and return the title to the United States, unfortunately, for him, that was not the case. Shlemenko surprised Marshall with an early takedown that led Marshall to mock the champion before he got back to his feet. While Shlemenko would get the fight to the ground, the takedowns seemed like they were of a smokescreen for what the champs real intentions were as he did not execute too much offense on the canvas.

The fight really got interesting after Marshall was able to stand after the second takedown, as Shlemenko went to work with his viscous striking. Shlemenko landed multiple strikes before landing a nasty left hand to the body that hurt Marshall. The former WEC champ would try to recover but a second liver shot would drop Marshall moments later. Shlemenko has now won twelve fights in a row and will look to make his third title defense against Season 9 champion Brennan Ward in 2014.
