MMAFrenzy’s coverage of the UFC 168 preliminary card continues with our recaps of tonight’s FS1 fight card. In tonight’s featured preliminary, Uriah Hall would defeat Chris Leben with a solid display of technical counter striking. In other action, Michael Johnson, Dennis Siver, and John Howard would close out 2013 with wins.
Hall Annihilates Leben
TUF 17’s Uriah Hall and TUF 1’s Chris Leben came into tonight’s bout with extremely high stakes for each man. In the end, it would be the younger Hall that would pick up a big win after bookending the first round with devastating strikes. After landing a near knockout to start the fight, Hall settled into a routine of counter striking the wilder Leben for the better part of the round. The Ultimate Fighter 17 finalist used that routine to set up a nasty right hand that dropped Leben and lead to Hall landing a barrage of shots until the final bell.
While Leben was able to stand, barely, he ultimately called it quits after asking his corner if he had been knocked out at the end of the first. The victory is Hall’s first official win in the UFC, while Leben is likely set to retire after tonight’s disappointing result.
Johnson Crushes Tibau
Michael Johnson picked up a huge victory tonight by defeating Gleison Tibau by knockout. The talented fighter concluded his exciting 2013 run with a wicked knockout that was a result of taking his corner’s advice between rounds. Johnson has now won two straight in impressive fashion after starting his 2013 with a wild loss to Reza Madadhi. The knockout loss is Tibau’s first since Nick Diaz defeated him via TKO in 2006 and snaps a two-fight win streak for the ATT fighter.
Siver Decisions Gamburyan
Dennis Siver would pick up a hard fought victory over Manny Gamburyan tonight in Las Vegas. While typically known for his flashy style of striking, the Russo-German fighter would assert a solid grappling game in rounds one and three to secure the decision. Siver has now won three of his four featherweight fights, while The Ultimate Fighter 5 finalist sees his two-fight win streak stopped tonight in Vegas.
Howard Defeats Bahadurzada
In a bout that will likely be most memorable for someone’s episode of gastric distress, John Howard would stay perfect since returning to the UFC. Howard used a solid all-round attack to wear down the Afghani fighter over the first two rounds and it was enough to put it on cruise control in the third. Howard has now won two straight in the Octagon, and four straight overall, while Bahadurzada has lost his last two.
