Renan Barao Cements Status As Elite Fighter

Renan Barao cemented his status as one of the top fighters in the world Saturday night, finishing Urijah Faber in the main event of UFC 169.

After being awarded the UFC bantamweight title when Dominick Cruz suffered another injury, Barao rattled Faber early and often in the opening round.

Later in the round, he floored Faber and pounced, forcing referee Herb Dean to step in. Faber didn’t appear out, but the decision was made.

“I hit him with a right and saw he was rocked,” Barao said. “So I just went on top of him and continued the barrage of punches.”

Barao (32-1) has won 22 straight fights, including UFC wins over the likes of Faber (twice), Eddie Wineland, Michael McDonald and Scott Jorgensen.

“I trained very hard for this fight,” he said. “I left my comfort zone. I always wanted to move forward and go for the knockout.”
