World Extreme Cagefighting will feature a 125-pound flyweight division beginning in March according to MMA Weekly, joining existing bantamweight (135), featherweight (145), lightweight (155), and welterweight (170) classes.
The WEC shifted it’s heavier middleweight (185) and light heavyweight (205) divisions to it’s sister promotion, the UFC, in late-2008 to differentiate itself by focusing on lighter weight classes.
World Extreme Cagefighting has finalized the lineup for WEC 38, which takes place on January 25th at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, California.
The Versus-broadcast event is headlined by a lightweight championship bout featuring current title-holder Jamie Varner putting the 155-pound title on the line against Donald Cerrone. A rematch featuring featherweights Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver co-headlines the event, while Danillo Villefort vs. Mike Campbell and Jose Aldo vs. Fredson Paixao round out the main card.
Ed Ratcliff vs. Anthony Njokuani, Edgar Garcia vs. Hiromitsu Miura, Dominick Cruz vs. Ian McCall, Scott Jorgensen vs. Frank Gomez,Blas Avena vs. Jesse Lennox, and Charlie Valencia vs. Seth Dikun are slated for the untelevised preliminary card.
WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown will square off with Leonard Garcia in his first defense of the 145-pound title.
MMAJunkie.com confirmed the matchup over the weekend.
The bout will headline a March event that is likely to take place in Florida.
Brown (20-4), a winner of eight-straight, earned the title with a first-round TKO of Urijah Faber. Garcia (12-3) most-recently posted back-to-back first-round TKOs ofHiroyuki Takaya and Jens Pulver.
WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres (35-1) successfully defended his title on Wednesday night at The Joint at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, dispatching 135-pound challenger Manny Tapia (10-1-1) with strikes midway through the second round of their WEC 37 headliner.
Bantamweight contender Brian Bowles (7-0) remained undefeated in a featured undercard bout, submitting Will Ribeiro (9-2) early in the third round.
WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres and 135-pound challenger Mania Tapia were among the 20 fighters who successfully made weight today in Las Vegas for WEC 37: Torres vs. Tapia.
The Versus-broadcast event takes place on Wednesday, December 3rd at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber (21-2) is likely to rematch Jens Pulver (21-10-1) at WEC 38 on January 25th in San Diego, California.
Sources close to the fight have confirmed the likely matchup with MMAWeekly.com, though official agreements have not yet been signed for the bout.
Despite losing in convincing fashion to Mike Brown at WEC 36 earlier this month via first-round TKO, Faber was likely to receive an immediate opportunity to reclaim his title. However, torn rib cartilage has sidelined Brown from defending his newly-claimed title at the promotion’s January event and Faber will instead battle Pulver for the second time.
After expressing his interest in hosting a match between Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, UFC President Dana White has now gone a step further, stating that he might actually be ready to sign Gina Carano, the “Face of Women’s MMA” to the WEC as sort of a trial run:
“Gina Carano is a star, I think she’s talented. I think she’s got all the tools, so what I’m willing to do is bring Gina into the WEC. We could do fights whenever there’s a challenger for Gina. That’s how I’ll test the waters and see how it goes.”
World Extreme Cagefighting today finalized the fight card for WEC 37: Torres vs. Tapia, which takes place on December 3rd at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and airs live on Versus.
A bantamweight championship bout headlines the eleven-bout card as 135-pound title-holder Miguel Torres takes on challenger Manny Tapia.
World Extreme Cagefighting, ahead of its December middleweight and light heavyweight merger with the UFC, has released former 185-pound champion Paulo Filho.
Filho’s manager, Ed Soares, confirmed the release today with CagePotato.com.
“We’ve recevied paperwork that they’re releasing him from his contract,” said Soares. “He’s had a rough year. We have faith that he’ll be back.”
Previously ranked middleweight and WEC 185-pound champion Paulo Filho will ship the middleweight belt to Chael Sonnen as soon as possible.
Sonnen defeated Filho via unanimous decision on Wednesday at WEC 36 in a bizarre and boring bout that was to be for the title before Filho missed weight by a staggering seven pounds forcing the fight to be re-booked as a three-round, non-title contest.
True to his pre-fight promise to give the belt to Sonnen if he emerged victorious, Filho, who peaked on the middleweight rankings at number two behind Anderson Silva, will relinquish the now-defunct title to Sonnen. The title was set to be abolished following the matchup anyways, making the move nothing more than a ceremonial gesture.
