Cub Swanson Vs. Frankie Edgar To Be Title Contender Fight?

Andrew Ravens

Frankie Edgar

The idea is if Cub Swanson could get passed Jeremy Stephens in his last fight then he would get a title shot, but now, the only fight that is being offered is against Frankie Edgar. #2 Vs. #3 in a title contender fight with the winner to face the winner of Jose Aldo – Chad Mendes. Here is what was reported on UFC Tonight:

“Frankie Edgar has said he wants to fight Cub Swanson, but Cub wasn’t interested in that because he was told he’d get a title shot next. Now that Aldo-Mendes has been pushed back, he doesn’t want to wait and he’s open to the fight Edgar. Cub wants to do the fight in November or December and Frankie likes that, but I’m hearing maybe that fight will take place on October 4 in Sweden. So they both want to fight, it’s just when and where? I’m also hearing that Korean Zombie vs. Akira Corassani could be put together for that fight.”

Cub Swanson (21-5) Has eight knockouts, seven submissions and five decision victories in his MMA career. The longtime WEC fighter came into the UFC 2-2 in his previous four fights. He made his UFC debut against Ricardo Lamas, but lost via arm triangle choke at UFC on Fox 1 – Velasquez vs. Dos Santos on Nov / 12 / 2011. He beat George Roop via knockout at UFC on Fox 2 – Evans vs. Davis on Jan / 28 / 2012.

In his next four, his was a perfect 4-0. He beat Ross Pearson via knockout at UFC on FX 4 – Maynard vs. Guida on Jun / 22 / 2012, then Charles Oliveira via unanimous decision at UFC 152 – Jones vs. Belfort on Sep / 22 / 2012, then Dustin Poirier via knockout at UFC on Fuel TV 7 – Barao vs. McDonald on Feb / 16 / 2013 and finally Dennis Siver via knockout at UFC 162 – Silva vs. Weidman on Jul / 06 / 2013.

Swanson is now coming off a win over Jeremy Stephens at UFC Fight Night 44.

Frankie Edgar (17-4) Has five knockouts, three submissions and nine decision victories. He has never been finished in his MMA career. Edgar made his UFC debut way back in 2007 with a win over Tyson Griffin. In his last five fights prior to TUF 19 Finale against BJ Penn, he is 2-3. Edgar beat Gray Maynard via KO at UFC 136 – Edgar vs. Maynard 3 on Oct / 08 / 2011. Edgar then dropped three straight fights, he lost to Benson Henderson via unanimous decision at UFC 144 – Edgar vs. Henderson on Feb / 26 / 2012, then Benson Henderson via split decision at UFC 150 – Henderson vs. Edgar 2 on Aug / 11 / 2012 and finally against Jose Aldo via unanimous decision at UFC 156 – Aldo vs. Edgar on Feb / 02 / 2013.

Edgar then got a win over Charles Oliveira via unanimous decision at UFC 162 – Silva vs. Weidman on Jul / 06 / 2013. He is coming off a win over BJ Penn at TUF 19 Finale.

Time will tell if the two fighters square off.
