Vitor Belfort fans will be disappointed to hear that “The Phenom’s” title shot will have to wait even longer…Yes, the UFC has announced that Belfort’s long awaited title fight with Chris Weidman has been postponed, as the middleweight champ has incurred a hand injury.
The fight was set to headline UFC 181 on December 6th, but now it’s been put off to a later date.
While that’s an unfortunate development, the UFC has announced that welterweight champ Johny Hendricks will rematch Robbie Lawler at the upcoming event. That’s right. Everyone thought that Hendricks-Lawler II would likely take place next year, as the champ is recovering from bicep surgery, but evidently he’s good to go.
Hendricks scored a unanimous decision win over Lawler in March at UFC 171, and laid claim to the vacant welterweight title. Since the defeat, Lawler has made sure he’s remained the #1 contender by stopping Jake Ellenberger and then decisioning Matt Brown.
Belfort hasn’t fought now since last November, when he took out Dan Henderson in the first round to record his third consecutive, stoppage win. The only men to defeat Belfort since 2006 are Anderson Silva and Jon Jones.
UFC 181 will go down at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It will also include a bout between lightweight champ Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez.
