For some time, many observers argued that Luke Rockkhold could become one of the UFC’s top stars, and the middleweight continues to take steps in that direction. After all, not only is the former Strikeforce champ coming off highlight reel victories over Tim Boetsch and Costas Philippou in 2014, but now the 29 year-old has signed a sponsorship deal with Adidas…That’s right. Not one of the bazillion MMA clothing companies, but a mainstream, sporting goods giant.
News of Rockhold’s deal is being reporting by Forbes.com, which included the following statement from Adidas Combat Sports Managing Director Scott Viscomi:
“Luke Rockhold is the kind of renaissance athlete a brand dreams of working with,” Viscomi was quoted saying. ”He understands what it means to be a professional Adidas athlete, and he does everything we ask of him, in addition to bringing us opportunities. We are honored to have him on the team with Robbie and look forward to working with them as we continue our mission to add value to the USA combat sports market.”
Rockhold also relayed in the story that “Ever since Run DMC came out with their shell toes and Adidas track suits, I was hooked.” He’s not the only one. The “Robbie” Viscomi is referring to is UFC welterweight contender Robbie Lawler (who is set to fight champion Johny Hendricks on December 6th).
The new and significant deal materializes for Rockhold as he gets ready to battle rival Michael Bisping at UFC FN 55 on November 8th, in Sydney, Australia.
That fight definitely has the potential to be something pretty, pretty fantastic.
