Conor McGregor may be a massive favorite to win at UFC Fight Night 59, and the vast majority of people seem to believe “Notorious” will defeat Dennis Siver, but Thiago Tavares apparently isn’t one of them.
The UFC veteran, who is scheduled to fight Nik Lentz at UFC FN 60 next month, recently appeared on “The MMA Hour”. The former lightweight was asked to weigh in on McGregor, and the fighter’s well documented success / hype.
According to a follow up report from MMA Fighting.com, here is some of what Tavares had to say about the rising featherweight:
“First of all, I don’t think Conor deserves to fight for the title,” Tavares said. “There are other fighters ahead of him.”
“He’s a good striker, but hasn’t shown anything else,” Tavares added. “They never put him in there against a wrestler. Nik Lentz, for an example, would beat Conor. I would bet my money on that. In fact, I think Denis Siver will defeat him.”
Tavares is just one of several fighters who have argued that McGregor needs to face a top notch wrestler, and that further, he shouldn’t be next in line for a title shot. Not too many fighters, however, seem to be predicting a Siver upset come January 18th.
Of course, it’s worth noting that Siver has gone 10-3, with 1 no contest, in his second run with the UFC. The only men that have defeated him during that time are Ross Pearson, Donald Cerrone and Cub Swanson, so, it’s not like the guy’s been struggling to maintain a roster spot. He is, after all, ranked #10 at 145.
Tavares, meanwhile, is coming off a successful debut at 145, as he tapped out Robbie Peralta at a Fight Night card in August. The talented grappler has won two in a row now, after he was stopped by lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov back in January, 2013.
You never know, perhaps McGregor and Tavares will meet at some point in the future.
UFC FN 59 will be hosted by the TD Garden in Boston, and will also feature Donald Cerrone taking on fellow, lightweight contender Benson Henderson.
