Cung Le wasn’t on the best of terms with the UFC as his fighting career came to an end, but the promotion’s Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta have complimented and thanked the fighter following his retirement.

Yes, if you missed it, the feared striker announced he is calling it quits on Tuesday. Le’s retirement comes at a time when he is one of several fighters who have launched a class action lawsuit against the UFC, and not long after his well documented issues with the promotion, regarding his rescinded suspension.

Following the news of Le’s retirement, the UFC posted a follow up report regarding the fighter, and both White and Fertitta were quoted in the story.

Fertitta, who is the UFC’s Chairman and CEO stated:

“Cung Le was a great ambassador of the sport for us in Asia and one of the most exciting middleweights to step foot in the Octagon. We wish him well in his retirement and future endeavors.”

And the promotion’s president White added:

“Cung Le was awesome and would take any fight,” UFC President Dana White added. “He was such a huge piece of the success of The Ultimate Fighter China. I loved working with him and wish him well in the future.”

There were certainly a lot of folks who also believed Le was awesome, as his fights typically featured plenty of wince inducing kicks and lots of action. Now it will be interesting to see what kind of role, if any, Le takes related to MMA. Considering his current issues with the UFC, one would think we won’t be seeing Le at the promotion’s events or assuming a role within the company, like other retired fighters, any time soon…

Le closed out his memorable fighting career with a MMA record of 9-3 and a kickboxing record of 17-0. During his UFC run Le scored wins over Rich Franklin and Patrick Cote, and was defeated by Wanderlei Silva and most recently, Michael Bisping.
