Yes, Shlemenko used one of his feared, spinning backfists to crumple Manhoef to the mat in round two, and then he finished the fight with a follow up strike from above. If you’re new to MMA then you might know that both Shlemenko and Manhoef are quite talented at inflicting bodily harm with their legs and fists.
You can watch the end of the memorable fight below.
Not only was it a big win for Shlemenko, because the internet is buzzing about it today, but because it was his first victory with Bellator since he lost the middleweight belt to Brandon Halsey last year.
The American quickly choked out Shlemenko with a rear-naked-choke in September, which followed “Storm’s” technical submission loss to light-heavyweight Tito Ortiz several months earlier. The former UFC champ ended Shlemenko’s 13 fight winning streak…
Well, following last night’s win, Shlemenko made it clear that he’s hoping to fight Halsey again (quote via Bellator press release):
“I hope Bellator heard me and will let me correct the mistake I made in the past and will give me the opportunity to fight for the Bellator Middleweight World Championship against Brandon Halsey.”
So, it will be interesting to see what Bellator does with Shlemenko next, as the 30 year-old fighter is definitely one of the promotion’s most accomplished and exciting fighters. Shlemenko was coming off a win over Yasubey Enomoto heading into last night’s bout, as he decisioned the latter while fighting for Fight Nights in December.
