UFC Fight Night 63 is under way in Fairfax, Virginia, yes, despite the fact it’s still morning for you west coasters…

The card will be headlined by a pivotal bout between featherweight contenders Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas. The results for the prelims are below, and the play-by-play for the main card follows.

Liz Carmouche def. Lauren Murphy via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Alexander Yakovlev def. Gray Maynard via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

Timothy Johnson def. Shamil Abdurahimov via TKO (punches) R1, 4:57

Diego Ferreira vs. Dustin Poirier

Ferreira comes out aggressively. Poirier counters and Ferreira shoots in. Ferreira briefly drags Poirier to the mat. Ferreira clinches up but Poirier breaks free eventually. Both guys land some good shot. Poirier takes a low blow but doesn’t need much time to recover. Ferreira pushes Poirier to the cage. The latter works his way out and lands a solid kick to the body. Ferreira takes a stinging left and goes down. Ferreira quickly recovers, tries to throw Poirier to the mat, but can’t keep him there. Wow. Poirier sends Ferreira crashing to the mat again with a punch. The former featherweight lands a couple more from above and Ferreira is done. Big win for Poirier.

Clay Guida vs. Robbie Peralta

Guida charges out as per usual. Both featherweights are firing off regular jabs. Peralta lands a nice leg kick. Guida shoots in but Peralta defends. Wow. Guida picks Peralta up and slams him to the ground. Peralta works his way back to his feet. Guida slams Peralta down once again and is in sidemount. Peralta gets to halfguard and is trying to get back up. Guida takes his back. The latter lands a few knees to the body from behind. Round ends.

Round 2: Guida chucks a hard right to begin the road, and then shoots a double leg. Peralta works his way back up, and lands a couple of elbow’s to Guida’s back. Guida is working hard for the takedown but the ref splits them up. Peralta plants a right and then defends a shot from Guida. The latter is cut by his left eye. Guida continues to look for a takedown but Peralta is defending against the cage. Ref splits them up again. Both men fire hard rights that miss. Peralta lands a leg kick. Guida tries a takedown but Peralta defends. Round ends.

Round 3: Guida changes levels but then grazes Peralta with a head kick. Guida fires another kick that’s blocked. “The Carpenter” explodes in with a nicely timed double. Peralta gets up but is promptly slammed to the mat. Nicely done. Guida passes into mount and is hunting for an arm-triangle-choke. Guida gives it up. Peralta is back up but needs to do something fast. Peralta fires down some elbows to Guida’s shoulder and ear. Guida slams Peralta to the mat yet again. Round ends. Solid performance from Guida.

Milana Dudieva vs. Julianna Pena

Pena comes out charging, Dudieva looks for the slam, but her opponent defends. Dudieva lands a beautiful trip and takes Pena down. The latter scrambles back to her feet and takes Dudieva down. Pena moves into mount. Pena is firing down punches and elbows. Dudieva takes another big elbow.  Dudeiva could be done here. Wow. Pena continues to bring the pain from mount. Dudieva briefly turns over but can’t work her way out. Ref jumps in to rescue Dudieva from any further punishment. Big, impressive win for Pena who is returning from a devastating knee injury.

Michael Chiesa vs. Mitch Clarke

Chiesa comes out fast but eats a right hand. Clarke changes levels and pushes Chiesa to the cage. Clarke takes a right hand as he breaks away, but pushes Chiesa back to the fence. Clarke is working for a single leg but can’t get it. Both lightweights fire off kicks but Chiesa sweeps Clarke to the mat. The latter gets back up. Clarke gets tripped to the mat again but he pops back to his feet. Chiesa lands a couple of hard shots and Clarke is back pedalling. Clarke clinches up and again, gets tripped to the ground. This time Chiesa takes Clarke’s back. The latter is cut on the bridge of his nose. Chiesa is hunting for a choke but Clarke defends. Chiesa switches to an armbar attempt but can’t get it. Round ends.

Round 2: Clarke throws a couple of leg kicks. Chiesa comes charging in but gets pushed to the cage. Clarke fires a couple of foot stomps. Ref breaks them up. Chiesa wings a kick and lands a right. Now Clarke has his back to the fence but he reverses positions. Clarke gets swept to the floor and Chiesa takes his back once more. Chiesa lands a couple of elbows from behind. Clarke rolls over and stands back up with Chiesa on his back. The latter is looking for a choke but again, Clarke defends. Yikes. Clarke eats another elbow. Round ends.

Round 3: Clarke almost certainly needs a stoppage to win this fight. Clarke flurries but not much lands. Chiesa counters nicely with a left. Clarke fires a hard right that’s blocked. Clarke flurries in again and throws a head kick. Clarke lands a left but takes a counter. Chiesa comes with a flying knee. Clarke plants a left and a jab. Chiesa lands a couple of telling shots. Chiesa fires off a couple of hard kicks to the body and misses with a roundhouse. Chiesa should get the nod.

Al Iaquinta vs. Jorge Masvidal

Iaquinta throws a few punches to begin the fight, takes a leg kick. Iaquinta comes in with a leg kick and eats a jab. Iaquinta briefly goes for a single leg. Masvidal fires off a flying knee. Not a ton of volume from each guy. Iaquinta wings a right that misses. Masvidal plants another jab. Iaquinta fires a leg kick. Masvidal throws a spinning kick to the body. Masvidal comes with a spining head kick and then lands a left that rocks Iaqunita. Wow. Iaquinta goes for a heel hook but Masvidal waves it off, scrambles out. Iaquinta takes a few more punishing shots and winds up on his back. Masvidal cuts the lightweight open with a shot from above. Round ends.

Round 2: Both men come out slow. Iaquinta is still bleeding from below his right eye. Masvidal lands another jab and Iaquinta’s cut opens up more. Both guys fire off kicks. Iaquinta cracks Masvidal with a right hand. Masvidal plants a hard kick to the body. Iaquinta eats a hard right, changes levels, but can’t get the takedown. Iaquinta fires a leg kick, shoots in, but again Masvidal defends.  Round concludes.

Round 3: Masvidal attempts a flying knee that misses. He follows up with a body kick. Iaquinta plants another leg kick and lands a right. Masvidal continues to play with his jab. Iaquinta launches an overhand right that misses. Another leg kick from Iaquinta. Masvidal’s left leg looks pretty, pretty bruised. Masvidal fires a head kick that’s blocked. Now Iaquinta taunts Masvidal for moving backwards. Iaquinta comes in charging and attempts a sweep that misses. He follows up with a right hand. Masvidal plants another kick to the body. And another. Iaquinta’s face is a bloody mess. Wow. Iaquinta is going for it but round ends. Close round.

Iaquinta tells the crowd to eff off after the decision gets booed, citing he “fought his ass off”…

Chad Mendes vs. Ricardo Lamas

Both featherweights fire kicks to begin the bout. Lamas with an inside leg kick. Lamas fires an uppercut that may have landed as Mendes shoots in. Lamas fires off a couple of leg kicks. Mendes is pursuing Lamas. Another kick from the latter. Mendes crushes Lamas with a booming right. Wow. Lamas gets up but goes down again. He’s in big, big trouble. Lamas is diving for a leg but can’t get it. Mendes is tossing down follow up punches. Fight’s over. Crazy. What a win for “Money”.
