Cris “Cyborg” Justino has said she intends to drop down to 135, and it’s a must if she wants to fight UFC champ Ronda Rousey, but the featherweight is still calling for a catch-weight scrap with “Rowdy”.
As you almost certainly know, there has been talk about “Cyborg” and Rousey fighting for quite some time now, and the two have formed quite the beef along the way. In the past, Justino said she wouldn’t be able to cut down to 135, but more recently, the Invicta FC champ has committed to dropping down.
“Cyborg” is booked to defend Invicta’s 145 title on July 10th against an opponent who has yet to-be-determined. After and if Justino does that, the plan is for her to make the move to bantamweight, compete, and then face Rousey.
The Brazilian star appeared on the latest episode of “UFC Tonight” on Friday, and when asked about her plans to move to 135, she stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“You know, now I have a professional nutrition guy, and his name’s George Lockhart, and he’s helped me,” Justino said. “He’s helping me now make 145 easier. He’s followed my work now, and I’ll try 100 percent to make this fight happen.”
So it’s all good then right? Well, although it seems clear Justino is going to do her best to drop down to 135, she also admitted that she doesn’t really care about winning the UFC’s bantamweight title. The 29 year-old said the really just wants to fight Rousey, and added:
“Let’s go fight. Let’s go meet at 140,” she said. “You can have this fight for my fans and your fans and make a great fight for women’s MMA.”
Since the UFC and Rousey have repeatedly said they’re not interested in booking a fight at 140, the chances of that happening are slim. So, hopefully Justino is able to make the drop, perform well, and then an all-star bout with “Rowdy” will happen.
Rousey, it’s worth noting, is scheduled to face Bethe Correia on August 1st at UFC 190.
