Michael Johnson has been on a pretty impressive roll as of late, and if the lightweight scores a big win over Benson Henderson at the TUF 21 Finale, “The Menace” believes a title shot’s in order.
Since Johnson was submitted by Reza Madadi in April, 2013, the Blackzilians fighter has gone on to defeated big name vets in Gleison Tibau, Joe Lauzon, Melvin Guillard and Edson Barboza. As a result, the 28 year-old is sitting in the #5 spot in the UFC’s 155 rankings.
Recently, Johnson spoke to FOX Sports about his upcoming bout with Henderson, and had this to say while discussing the possibility of locking up a title shot:
“I can definitely see that and that’s the plan,” Johnson said. “Go in here and get a decisive victory, whether it’s a knockout or a decision, just a dominant performance and that puts me right there for a title shot where I feel like I do deserve it after that point. Everything’s right on schedule for me.”
Could Johnson secure a title fight with the champion Rafael dos Anjos? If he scores an impressive win over the #6 positioned Henderson? Possibly, but some other pieces would likely have to fall into place.
For example, if Khabib Nurmagomedov is still sidelined due to injury, or Donald Cerrone has a tough time against John Makdessi at UFC 187 on May 23rd. Cerrone and Nurmagomedov were booked to fight in a title shot eliminator that night, until the latter recently re-injured his knee.
All this aside, Henderson-Johnson has the makings of an outstanding fight. The TUF 21 Finale will go down on July 12th.
