When knowledgeable fans are confronted by the ridiculous narrative that flyweights “don’t finish fights”, chances are the name John Dodson is evoked as evidence to the contrary. The Jackson-Wink MMA fighter has demonstrated on several occasions that his hands are extremely heavy, even if he’s not, and Dodson is clearly aware of this.

The flyweight contender recently spoke to MMA Junkie.com in advance of his bout this Saturday with Zach Makovsky, and while doing so, Dodson relayed the following:

“I think I’m the fastest guy and I think I’m the strongest guy at 125,” Dodson said. “I can knock out anybody at 125 (pounds), 135 – and if Conor McGregor thinks he’s so bad, I’ll take him out too.”

Whoa. How about that Mr. McGregor? A flyweight is proclaiming he could take you out. It will be interesting to see what the brash featherweight’s reaction will be to such a statement. Really, “Notorious” should admire Dodson for his bravado no?

First things first, however, and that’s Makovsky, who is certainly no joke. Not only is the latter the promotion’s #9th ranked flyweight and a former Bellator champ, but Dodson hasn’t fought since last summer. When asked about the fact he’s been sidelined for almost a year, due to a knee injury, Dodson stated this:

“I’m going to be good to go on fight night,” Dodson said. “I feel amazing. I feel awesome. There’s nothing in my mind that tells me that I’ve been sitting on the sidelines for most of a year. I’ve been training as hard as I can and making sure I’m improving every step of the way.”

There you have it. Dodson-Makovsky definitely has the makings of something special.

UFC 187 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
