There’s the old saying that you learn more from your defeats, than from your victories, and clearly Kobe Bryant subscribes to that idea.

Recently the basketball star spoke to USA Today (MMA, and reported that he reached out to Ronda Rousey, after her vicious KO defeat to Holly Holm in October. What kind of advice to Bryant provide?

“…It’s not about how you win. A true champion is about how you lose and come back from that.

“I told her, ‘It’s a beautiful thing.’ That’s what I told her. I said, ‘To be a true champion sometimes you have to get knocked down.’ It happens to the best of us. It happened with my Achilles (when I tore it), (Muhammad) Ali got put down several times – it happens to the best of us.”

It’s not clear when Rousey will fight again, but the star is expected to return to the Octagon this fall. Prior to her loss to Holm, she was considered by some to be the most dominant champ in combat sports. Holm, meanwhile, will face Miesha Tate on March 5th,
