Alexander Gustafsson admitted in recent months that he was losing the motivation to train and fight, but clearly a break from the grind has been good for “The Mauler”.

Just recently, the UFC announced that Gustafsson will battle Jan Blachowicz at the promotion’s September 3rd card in Hamburg, Germany. The Swedish star will be fighting for the first time since last October, when he lost via split decision to light-heavyweight champ, Daniel Cormier. Following the heart breaking defeat, Gustafsson reported that he was having a tough time getting to the gym.

Well, it sounds like that’s all changed. Gustafsson recently spoke with Flo Combat about his next bout, and while doing so, the Swedish star said this:

“I believe and I know I can beat DC and Jones now,” Gustafson said. “I can’t wait to show everyone the new and improved Alex.”

“I’ve been close to being a champion before, but I still believe I’ve got a lot to learn. That’s why I’ve used this time away from competition to really focus on sharpening all of my skills. I truly believe I’ve not yet reached my full potential. I’ve still so much to give, and I’m only 29 years old…”

It’s good to hear this, as there’s no question that Gustafsson is one of the best 205’ers in the world. After all, it’s Gustafsson who pushed Jon Jones to his utmost limits in 2013, and he nearly won the belt last year against “DC”.

Blachowicz is a very capable fighter, however, so Gustafsson will have to focused on the task ahead. The upcoming event in Hamburg will be headlined by a heavyweight fight between Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett.
