Conor McGregor may be coming off one of his most impressive and biggest wins to date, but Khabib Nurmagomedov certainly isn’t singing the praises of the new lightweight champ.
McGregor put Eddie Alvarez away at UFC 205 to become the lightweight champ; a guy who many folks believed would be pose a serious threat to the Irish star. That same night, Nurmagomedov put on another grappling clinic versus Michael Johnson, and submitted him in round three.
Ever since then, Nurmagomedov has been campaigning hard for a title shot and then some. But, more recently it’s been reported McGregor isn’t planning to fight again until next May at the earliest, since he’s expecting his first child. As a result, Nurmagomedov’s switched gears and has been calling for a bout with Tony Ferguson. Case in point, he recently told RT Sports this (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“Last time he (Ferguson) was injured. He pulled out, not me. He’s not coming to April 16 to the fight. Before I have been injured and now it’s, why not? Now, I think the UFC wants to make this fight. I feel this and for me its perfect date is March. Not early, only March.”
“Tony Ferguson is tough guy, tough opponent. Nine-win streak. Why not? I think this is real high level lightweight fight. Not Conor versus me I think this is real high level fight.”
Now, does Nurmagomedov really believe that he’s that bad a match-up for McGregor? Or is this all just a way to fire up McGregor? And ensure he gets to scrap the champ down the line? Hard to say. One thing’s for certain, Nurmagomedov – Ferguson will be a “high level” scrap.
