Anthony Johnson is reporting he was offered a bout with Gegard Mousasi, after Daniel Cormier went down with an injury, but the light-heavyweight determined taking the fight would be “too risky”.

Johnson was scheduled to fight Cormier at UFC 206 on December 10th, but the latter suffered a torn adductor tendon and had to withdraw. Recently “Rumble” appeared on “The MMA Hour“, and he reported the UFC asked him about facing Mousasi for an interim 205 title instead.

The heavy handed fighter turned it down, however, for the following reasons:

“When Gegard was presented to me, it would’ve been a good fight, but it wouldn’t have done anything for me,” said Johnson. “Fighting him and becoming the interim champion, as much trash as I’ve talked and ‘DC’ has talked about interim titles being fake champions, if I would have beat him, it wouldn’t mean anything.”

“And if I had lost, I would have to start from scratch. It was just too risky.”

That’s certainly a situation where Johnson had a lot to lose, and not much to gain, other than a paycheck. It would have an interesting fight to catch though…
