Daniel Cormier has made it abundantly clear over the last couple of years that he wants to fight Jon Jones again, badly, but recently the UFC’s 205 champ took that position to a whole new level.
Cormier and Jones fought for the first time back in January, 2015, and the latter won the fight via unanimous decision. Most recently, the two were booked for a rematch at UFC 200 last July, but Jones tested positive for the banned substances hydroxy-clomiphene and Letrozole, and the fight was cancelled. Although Jones and his team were able to demonstrate that the former champ took the substances unintentionally, the star is suspended until this coming July.
Well, recently Cormier sat down with Colin Cowherd, and once again, “DC” made it clear that he has to fight Jones one more time. When asked if he would do so, even if he thought Jones was using PEDs, Cormier stated (quote via MMA Fighting):
“I’d fight him… If that was the case before, then the guy that I’m gonna fight the next time is not gonna be the same guy I saw the first time because of USADA and the drug testing that we are under now… But yes, I would fight him [even if he were on PEDs]. It doesn’t matter. The competitor in me and my belief in my coaches and my skill, I have to get that back. I can’t live with it.”
Wow. Now that’s a guy who really wants to avenge his defeat. It remains to be seen, of course, what’s next for Cormier. He was scheduled to fight Anthony Johnson at UFC 206 last month, but had to pull out due to injury. The consensus seems to be, however, that the promotion will move forward with Cormier – Johnson next.
