Recently Dana White said the odds of Conor McGregor boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr., were the same as him suiting up for the Patriots, but the latter is claiming the fight is “very close” to getting done…

Recently the combat sports world has been buzzing again about a Mayweather – McGregor bout, as both men have renewed their calls for the match-up. In fact, at a recent media event, McGregor said he believes his next fight will be with Mayweather.

Well, since then, Mayweather has told ESPN that “we’re getting very, very close” to finalizing the fight. The story also quotes Nevada State Athletic Commission chairman Anthony Marnell, who said the commission is aware of ongoing negotiations for the bout. Marnell also noted:

“There is a lot of real stuff going on,” Marnell said. “It still seems like a long shot, but when there is a lot of money involved, people tend to figure it out…”

The chairman also stated that “people are under certain contractual obligations that need to get figured out.” That’s almost certainly a reference to McGregor, who is under contract to the UFC. Recently White tabled an offer to Mayweather, for a boxing match with Mayweather, which the boxing star promptly shot down.

Since then, White has repeated that the fight can’t happen, unless the UFC is a partner. McGregor has stated that he believes the Ali Act would allow him to box Mayweather, with or without the UFC’s permission. McGregor also said, however, that he’d like the UFC to be involved.

So, nothing is done yet, and Mayweather could be exaggerating, but obviously things are in motion.
