Volkan Oezdemir has bombed his way into title contention in a span of just six months, but Anthony Johnson doesn’t believe he’s ready to unseat Jon Jones from this throne.

Oezdemir joined the UFC this past February, and earned a decision win over light-heavyweight contender, Ovince Saint Preux. Since then, however, “No Time” has quickly taken out Misha Cirkunov and most recently Jimi Manuwa, and is knocking on the title shot door as a result.

Well, Johnson is more than familiar with Oezdemir, since the latter was one of his main training partners, before “Rumble” announced his retirement earlier this year. Recently Johnson was a guest on “The MMA Hour”, and he had this to say about Oezdemir, and how he’d fair against the champ, Mr. Jones (quote via MMA Fighting):

“Jon is still at another level,” said Johnson, who did praise Oezdemir and referred to the Swiss fighter as a “beast”. “… Jon, man, for sure. That’s just the reality of it. Jon would win, I know that, but Volkan is not a p***y. He can take a lot of punishment and keep going.

“I’ve hit Volkan with some bombs. He might have shaken his head, but then he’d come right back for me. He’s the real deal.

“Volkan isn’t the fastest,” Johnson added. “He’s kind of like DC (Daniel Cormier), he has heart… a lot of heart.”

There you have it. Although Oezdemir and Johnson have been teammates, clearly the latter doesn’t feel like he needs to hide what he truly thinks, in terms of his chances against Jones.

Of course Oezdemir has demonstrated that all he needs is one shot, and a result, a lot of people would like to see how he does against “Bones”. But, when you consider all the tools Jones has, and the fact he’s never incurred a real defeat, it’s hard to disagree with Johnson here.

Johnson, it should also be noted, recently said that he’d consider coming back to face Jones, if the UFC came with a nice, big offer.
