The news that Jon Jones has been informed of a potential doping violation rocked the MMA world earlier this week, but Alexander Gustafsson evidently wasn’t surprised…
On Tuesday, it was revealed that a sample taken from Jones on July 28th, has been flagged by USADA. That was one day before Jones faced Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, and retook the light-heavyweight title, by finishing “DC”. Since then, Jones’ agent has confirmed that the sample tested positive for the anabolic steroid turinabol, but, they are denying the champion knowingly took any banned substances.
The latest scandal to hit Jones comes at a time when many people believed Alexander Gustafsson would be tapped for a title shot next (although, Dana White recently said the promotion was looking at having Jones fight Stipe Miocic). Gustafsson provided Jones stiffest test to date back in 2013, when he lost via decision to “Bones”.
The Swedish star, of course, was asked to comment on Jones’ USADA flag, and Gustafsson had this to say (quote via MMA Betz):
Very hard to say something right now before we know the whole story. We’ll wait and see what the B test says. Should it prove to be true, it’s a pity for our whole sport, sorry for DC who lost his belt against him, sorry for all his fans. It’s sad for me as well if it’s true. If there’s somebody I have been looking forward to fighting it’s him. Revenge in that fight is what I wanted. Am I surprised? No, nothing about that man surprises me anymore. But I do not want to judge him yet, not until we know everything. But if it’s true, then it would be best for him to end the sport.
Gustafsson has been critical of Jones a fair bit in recent months, so, these comments shouldn’t shock anyone. Now it remains to be seen if Jones can launch a successful appeal, or how long he’ll be suspended for. Could Cormier – Gustafsson II be coming to an Octagon soon?
