Most people have closed the book on Ronda Rousey’s fighting career, but the star’s striking coach believes she should come back to scrap Cris “Cyborg”.
Since Rousey was quickly stopped by Amanda Nunes last December, the former bantamweight champ hasn’t said she’s done fighting, but she hasn’t talked about returning to the cage either. Dana White, however, has said several times he believes the star’s days in MMA are over. After all, recently Rousey married Travis Browne, and even before her loss to Nunes, she reported she didn’t plan to fight much longer, and that she was looking forward to starting a family.
Well, recently Rousey’s striking coach, Edmond Tarverdyan, appeared on “The MMA Hour”. While discussing Rousey’s future in fighting, Tarverdyan admitted he hopes the star comes back to face “Cyborg” (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“That’s the one,” Tarverdyan said. “I want that fight. When I trained Ronda, I know Ronda could beat Cyborg. I know that. Cyborg is too slow.”
“I don’t know,” Tarverdyan added, while discussing whether he thinks the all-star bout is possible. “I don’t know. We’ll live and we’ll see. If injuries weren’t there and everything was where it was, we would take that fight and I’m telling you she’s too slow for us. And Ronda will beat her. Ronda needs a challenge that she really needs to be like this person is no good and I need to prove something to the whole world. That’s how Ronda works good.”
“…I’ve spoken to her. I don’t know if she’ll do it. One more fight, maybe. If she really can. If her body does give her one more fight and she really wants to mentally, she might. It’s 50-50 right now I would say.”
There’s no question that “Cyborg” – Rousey would be massive, yes, even though the latter’s been stopped in her last two fights. But, at this juncture, it’s kind of hard to imagine this taking place. Rousey has plenty of opportunities outside of the Octagon, so, for her to come back and risk taking a third straight, stoppage loss, seems like a stretch.
But, then again, this is a year where Conor McGregor has boxed Floyd Mayweather, and GSP’s about to fight Michael Bisping for the middleweight title…
