A lot of eyebrows were raised when it was announced Georges St-Pierre was going to return to the Octagon as a middleweight, and it sounds like Rory MacDonald may have been one of those folks.

St-Pierre is getting set to fight middleweight champ Michael Bisping, at UFC 217 on November 4th. Since the former welterweight champ has never competed at 185 in the UFC, the fight caught more than a few people off guard, when plans for it were announced.

Recently GSP’s longtime trainer partner, Rory MacDonald, had this to say about his buddy’s move to 185 (quote via MMA Junkie):

“The 185 thing, I probably wouldn’t have advised it, but he is his own guy,” MacDonald said. “He has his own goals. He’s obviously very talented.

“He is the most dominant champion in welterweight, and one of the most dominant champions ever. It’s hard for me to say what’s right and wrong to a guy like that.”

It’s going to be fascinating to see if St-Pierre can end Bisping’s reign, no question. MacDonald, meanwhile, is booked to fight Bellator 170 champ Douglas Lima on January 20th.
