The fighters who are scheduled to compete at tomorrow’s UFC 216 tomorrow are going to start weighing in over the next few hours, and it’s going to be very interesting to see how Kevin Lee looks. Why’s that you ask?
Well, at yesterday’s open workouts, Lee reported that he still had almost 20 pounds to cut for his fight Saturday with Tony Ferguson. Here’s what the rising lightweight had to say, when asked about his weight (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“I feel like a million bucks, still full of a lot of energy. I’ve got a big weight cut ahead of me, so that’s where the focus is right now,” Lee said.
“Right now I’m about ’74, something like that. I have a decent little cut. It ain’t going to be nothing different. I’ve cut from a lot higher than that.”
Now, since he’s fighting Ferguson for the interim lightweight title, Lee’s going to have be at 155 this AM, in order to quality for the belt. But, clearly “The Motown Phenom” isn’t too worried about shedding 19 pounds or so in one day, in order to make that weight.
“It’s going to be smooth,” Lee said. “I carry a lot of muscle, so it’s a lot easier for me to cut the water, and I’m just not a b*tch about it. I had tiramisu last night. So, look, look, the sh*t gonna hurt when it gets down to the last (few pounds), when it gets down to the end, but I’m gonna man up about it, especially when you’re talking 20 percent (of my purse)…”
It’s important to remember, of course, that Lee has wrestled extensively over the years, so, cutting a lot of weight isn’t anything new for him. But, still, in light of what went down earlier this year when Khabib Nurmagomedov had to drop out of a bout with Ferguson, as a result of issues he incurred during his cut, you can understand why some fans might be a wee bit concerned.
Fighters can begin weighing in for UFC 216 today at 9 AM/PT. Saturday’s card will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
