Scott Coker is up to his old, good promoting tricks, as the Bellator President has informed MMA Junkie that the promotion’s holding a tourney next year to crown a new heavyweight champ. Not only that, but the competition will feature several of Bellator’s biggest names, as Fedor Emelianenko, Matt Mitrione, Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, “Rampage” Jackson, Ryan Bader, “King Mo” Lawal and Chael Sonnen.

Coker was quoted saying in the aforementioned report:

“This is going to be something that’s iconic for us,” Coker said. “Tournaments, traditionally, are kind of the way martial arts contests happen. Now we get to put eight iconic brand names in our sport together over a year, and then whoever wins will be crowned the heavyweight champion.”

The championship final is expected to go down in December, 2018.

Now sure, some purists will note that half of the competitors aren’t heavyweights, or at least, natural heavyweights. But, there’s no doubt that by including the likes of Sonnen or “Rampage”, Bellator has increased it’s opportunities to promote top drawing bouts, substantially.

The opening round of match-ups for the World Grand Prix have yet to be announced.
