Bellator has announced the opening round bouts for the promotion’s heavyweight grand prix, which will take place throughout next year, and will crown a new champion.
Recently Bellator confirmed that the likes of Fedor Emelianenko (36-5, 1 NC), “Rampage” Jackson (37-12), Chael Sonnen (30-15-1), Roy Nelson (23-14), Frank Mir (18-11), “King Mo” Lawal (21-6, 1 NC), Matt Mitrione (12-5) and Bellator light heavyweight champ Ryan Bader(24-5) would compete in the tournament.
Now the promotion’s announced that Jackson and Sonnen will fight on January 20th at a card in Los Angeles. ESPN is reporting that Nelson and Mitrione will fight on February 16th at a card in Uncasville, Connecticut, and that Mir and Emelianenko are going to battle at an April event in Rosemont, Illinois, but the exact date isn’t confirmed.
In the opening round’s final bout, Bader will face Lawal at a card in San Jose, California in May. The date, however, hasn’t been finalized.
