Zabit Magomedsharipov showcased again yesterday why hardcore fans and observers are hailing him as one of the UFC’s top prospects, and following his win, he called out Yair Rodriguez. Interested?
Magomedsharipov took on a very game Sheymon Moraes at UFC Fight Night 122, but the latter was largely outscored in the striking, clinch and ground exchanges. Finally, in round three, Magomedsharipov finished the fight with a beautifully executed, anaconda choke.
After the win, the Dagestan fighter said the following through his translator, while discussing his next fight (quote via MMA Junkie):
“I’ve proved myself in the top 15 at the least, and I believe I can give a fight to any (of the) top five in my division,” Magomedsharipov said. “If you ask me who I want to fight, I think I could fight against Yair Rodriguez. I want to fight with him because he’s a special striker, as well.”
So, ya. If you’ve seen both Magomedsharipov and Rodriguez fight, then you know that this is a match-up that has the potential to be truly something special. Both men are ridiculously talented, athletic and diverse strikers, as Magomedsharipov referred to.
You have to wonder, however, if Rodriguez would be interested. Currently he’s ranked #7 in the featherweight division, and Magomedsharipov isn’t ranked in the top 15. That could change in the next round of rankings of course.
