Alexander Gustafsson fought just once in 2017, and it looks like we won’t be seeing “The Mauler” fighting anytime soon.
Recently the Swedish star and light-heavyweight contender revealed on Instagram that he’s had surgery on his shoulder. Although Gustafsson didn’t provide any timeline for a possible return to the cage, one would think he’ll likely be out until mid-2018.
So, it will be interesting to see how this impacts the title shot picture at 205. It was expected that Volkan Oezdemir would challenge champion Daniel Cormier next, but, it’s not clear what’s going to happen now, following news of Oezdemir’s arrest.
Gustafsson’s only bout this past year took place in May, when he finished fellow contender, Glover Teixeira. Currently he’s ranked #1 in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division.
