There are a lot of moving parts right now in the UFC’s lightweight title picture, but Edson Barboza believes a win at UFC 219, should deliver him a championship fight.

The vaunted striker is booked to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at the upcoming event, which will go down on December 30th in Las Vegas. Recently Barboza was a guest on MMA Radio, and the lightweight had this to say (quote via MMA Junkie):

“I’ve fought with seven guys in the top 15, and definitely, I think if I win this fight, I really deserve the title shot,” he said. “I don’t care if it’s (undisputed UFC lightweight champ) Conor (McGregor) or (interim champ Tony) Ferguson. But I definitely deserve the title shot.”

Now, considering that Nurmagomedov is currently ranked #2 in the lightweight division, and is undefeated, one would think a win over “The Eagle” would garner a title shot. But, since it’s still not clear yet when and who McGregor is going to fight next, you never know.

If McGregor does elect to fight Ferguson, but the bout isn’t booked for next spring, then the UFC might ask Barboza to fight again in the interim. For example, say Justin Gaethje defeats Eddie Alvarez this Saturday at UFC 218? What about Barboza – Gaethje as a title shot eliminator?
