Floyd Mayweather recently put the brakes on talk that he’s thinking about transitioning into MMA, but, Demetrious Johnson says he’d be down for a striking only scrap with the undefeated boxer.
Yes, as you likely know, the MMA world was buzzed a wee bit earlier this week, when Dana White reported that the UFC’s talking with Mayweather, about the possibility of him fighting in the Octagon. But, not long after, Mayweather said he didn’t intend to come out of retirement for either any more boxing bouts, or to give MMA a go.
“I think it would go very well for me, obviously,” Johnson said. “I’m very well-rounded. It’s mixed martial arts. I would even do a handicap. I won’t even grapple with him. I won’t even go to the ground at all. I’ll get him in the clinch, bang up, hit him in the liver, kick him in the liver, take out his legs and work him.”
“100 percent [I would win],” said Johnson. “Yeah, of course. You have the clinch, there’s kicks, there’s elbows, it’s mixed martial arts. I come from one of the great coaches – Matt Hume, Brad Kertson – and my skill set is well-rounded.
“I’d probably get after that liver. Have to get after that liver. Beat him up in the Muay Thai clinch because he likes to clinch a lot…”
Now, we all know that this bout isn’t going to happen, but it would be fascinating to see. Would Johnson defeat Mayweather in a stand-up only match? Despite the fact he’s smaller than “Money”, and would be facing one of the greatest boxers of this generation? Yes. Yes he probably would. As Johnson’s demonstrated before, his clinch game and Muay Thai skills are absolutely nasty.
Back to the real world, however, it remains to be seen when and who Johnson will fight next. T.J. Dillashaw has been calling for a bout with his fellow UFC champion, but nothing’s materialized yet.
