If you thought, or were hoping…that all the talk about Floyd Mayweather fighting under the UFC banner was wrapped up, well, it looks like that’s not the case.
Recently the MMA world was buzzed and or riled up, when Dana White reported he was talking with Mayweather’s camp, about the possibility of him signing a UFC deal. At that time, which was last week, White made the following comments to ESPN:
“We’re talking to Floyd about doing a UFC deal. It’s real. He was talking about [boxing] Conor McGregor. Was that real? Have you heard Floyd talk about many things that aren’t real? He usually tips his hand when he’s in the media, and then that s— ends up happening.
“We’re interested in doing something with Floyd. Everything is a realistic possibility. Mayweather vs. McGregor f—ing happened. Anything is possible.”
Mayweather punted all the speculation not long after, however, by saying he had no wish to box again, or transition into MMA.
Well, White appeared on FOX Sport’s “Undisputed” show today, and during it, he was asked about Mayweather. The UFC President had this to say about whether the retired fighter could end up signing with the UFC (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“He had come out earlier and said – that’s why people were asking me about it, and I said don’t count anything out on him coming over to the UFC, that anything is possible. And I still don’t,” White said. “Listen, you guys know I was here, I did not believe that McGregor-Mayweather would happen and it did. So anything is possible.
“I actually have a meeting with those guys today.”
So, it is pretty interesting to hear that White’s meeting with Mayweather’s team, although, this doesn’t mean that it will be about Mayweather signing with the UFC. It was also brought up in the aforementioned interview, that White plans to begin promoting boxing bouts under the UFC banner in 2018. So, the meeting could end up being about Mayweather Promotions teaming up with the company for boxing matches.
