Yoel Romero couldn’t win the middleweight title tonight at UFC 225, after missing weight Friday, but he very nearly, defeated Robert Whittaker.
Romero did not fire off much in the opening two rounds, while Whittaker peppered the contender with leg kicks and jabs. As round two ended, Romero’s right eye was badly swollen, but after some attention from the cut man, it looked better for round three.
In the third frame, Romero rocked Whittaker with a punishing punch, and the champ was put on the defensive for a couple of minutes. But, as that round ended, both men looked visibly fatigued.
In round four, Whittaker returned to punishing Romero’s lead leg with side kicks, but the champ didn’t throw his right hand hardly at all. Before round four came to an end, Romero wobbled Whittaker not once, but twice, with big punches.
Whittaker appeared to be okay at the beginning of round five. But a couple of minutes in, Romero sent him to the deck with a booming punch, and swarmed in with follow up attacks. Whittaker was able to weather the storm, however, and he managed to return fire before the final horn went.
Two of the judge’s scored the fight for Whittaker, and that would mean they didn’t score the final round 10-8 for Romero, which is shocking.
After the bout, Whittaker relayed that he broke his right hand not long into the bout.
