Colby Covington has had plenty to say since he secured the interim welterweight title at UFC 225 last weekend, and now the controversial fighter’s fired a greasing accusation at Rafael dos Anjos.
Colby faced the former lightweight champ in the co-headliner of the Chicago event, and “Chaos” emerged from the bout with the unanimous decision win. The judges handed Covington the fight via scores of 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46.
As most expected would be the case, Covington’s wrestling played a pivotal role in the victory, as he constantly pressured RDA and kept him on the defensive with takedown attempts. According to Fight Metric, however, the accomplished wrestler only completed 7 of the 18 takedown attempts he made.
Well, according to Covington, a big reason that ratio wasn’t higher, is because he claims RDA was cheating. While speaking to BJ Penn.com Radio, the outspoken fighter said this (quotes via Bloody Elbow):
“You don’t know how good I am until you’re in there with me. It’s a whole different level, so you know I knew I was going to beat him up on my feet. I was gonna take him down and beat him up, but my takedowns weren’t as effective because he was definitely greasing. He was 100% greased. Usually, when I get those body locks behind you, there’s no way to slip out, but I could feel him slipping off…
“I think before the fight he was putting [on] the coconut butter, whatever they do, and then the baby oil or whatever I’ve heard of, so he definitely was doing it, because I tried a couple shots on his legs and literally my hands slipped from up on his top leg to like his ankle, and he was like, able to slither through on somebody locks that I had, and it’s not sweat.”
Covington also reportedly referred to dos Anjos as a “filthy animal” while making the accusations, so that’s only going to increase the ire of RDA fans. The latter had won three in a row before facing Covington at UFC 225.
The new interim welterweight champ is expected to face reigning champ, Tyron Woodley next.
