The post UFC Fight Night 132: Jake Matthews, Shinsho Anzai Seek Spotlight appeared first on Fightline.
This Saturday from Singapore, Jake Matthews and Shinsho Anzai square off in a welterweight bout as part of the UFC Fight Night 132 prelims live on UFC Fight Pass.
With both fighters entering the Octagon on two-fight win streaks, the bout is a key one in the career path for Matthews and Anzai.
Matthews, a 23-year-old from Australia, has scored decisions over Li Jingliang and Bojan Velickovic since a pair of losses in 2016 to Andrew Holbrook and Kevin Lee. Overall, he is 13-3 including triumphs vs. Johnny Case, Vagner Rocha and Dashon Johnson.
Prior to signing with the UFC, Matthews was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter: The Nations. However, he was paired up with eventual finalist Olivier Aubin-Mercier, dropping a decision.
The promotion, though, saw more than enough to bring him on board. Matthews was a perfect 7-0 before coming to the UFC and has since went 6-3.
Like Matthews, Anzai has rebounded from a loss, winning back-to-back fights over Luke Jumeau – who Matthews bested during his run on the regional circuit – and Roger Zapata. The Zapata win came all the way back in 2015, as Anzai has fought just two since a 2014 loss to Alberto Mina.
The Mina fight was his welterweight and UFC debut, as he competed at middleweight where he captured the Pancrase title in 2014 with a win over Ryo Kawamura.
Along with his MMA resume, Mina was a winner of the ADCC Asia Trials in 2011 at two different weight classes and was a member of the 2005 All-Japan Junior Olympic Cup as an amateur, placing first at the 2008 All-Japan Combat Wrestling Championship.
He’s also fought as high as light heavyweight during his career, but the 32-year-old appears to have found a home at welterweight now.
