The biggest fight to be made in MMA right now is very likely one between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, and according to the latter’s coach, he’s pretty certain the all-star bout will go down this year.

For months and months, die hard fans have talked about whether a bout with Nurmagomedov and McGregor will take place, and if it does, how will it unfold. But, since McGregor was also tied to a lot of talk about a rubber match with Nate Diaz, or, sigh, even a MMA rematch with Floyd Mayweather, a fight with Nurmagomedov didn’t seem like a lock.

But now that Nurmagomedov holds the 155 title McGregor once did, and because of the former champ’s actions at the media day for UFC 223, buzz about the two fighting has never been higher. Well, recently McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, attended an event hosted by MMA analyst, Robin Black. The SBG leader was asked about the chances of Nurmagomedov – McGregor taking place, and Kavanagh said this (quote via MMA Fighting):

“It’s the obvious fight, as his coach and as a fan,” Kavanagh said. “As a fan of MMA, it’s the fight I want to see as well. I would almost bet anything — almost bet anything — that fight happens before the end of the year.”

“I can’t imagine it not happening.”

How about that? Now, it’s true that Kavanagh and other members of McGregor’s camp have said previously that they think this fight is likely next. But to hear Kavanagh sound this confident it will take place this year is awesome news.

2018 has had some big fights, and obviously UFC 226 features a massive one between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic right around the corner. But, if Khabib and Conor end up fighting this year, it’s pretty hard to imagine a bigger fight going down.

Could this fight get booked for the UFC’s New York City card in November? If McGregor comes to terms on a new deal? Seems like that would be a good place for it no?
